Course Overview

Target Audience
This online course is designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals involved in lipid management.

Lipid Academy Online also serves as a preparatory course for the Annual Scientific Sessions and other advanced lipid training. Additionally, participants earn NLA endorsed lipid education credits that will help to fulfill the CME requirements necessary to be eligible for the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABCL) and/or the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology (ACCL).

Program Description
The Lipid Academy course provides healthcare professionals with the core knowledge and tools necessary to provide optimal care to patients with dyslipidemias and related conditions, and serves as a pre-requisite course for the Annual Scientific Sessions and other advanced lipid training.

Lipid Academy Online consists of 7 interactive, slide-audio presentation modules with evidence-based notes and references and embedded assessment questions. Each module consists of 80-120 slides, divided into chapters. A pre- and post-test will be administered to determine your achievement of the educational objectives for the program. The Lipid Academy portal features a robust collection of resource materials for further study, and you may post a question to the faculty or comments for your peers.

The Lipid Academy online learning platform allows you to learn at your own pace, without travel expenses. You will earn a Certificate of Completion suitable for framing and up to a maximum of 12 hours of CME credit, 12.3 hours of CE credit, 12.25 hours of ACPE credit or 12 hours of CDR credit. The course is accepted as eligible continuing medical education by the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology and the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (physician certification program) for credentialing purposes.

Module 1 - Atherosclerosis, Lipids and Lipoproteins

  • Identify the functions and sources of cholesterol and triglycerides, and describe the role of lipoproteins in atherosclerosis
  • Explain lipoprotein metabolism and the role of the vascular system in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
  • Discuss the various pathways of atherogenesis, especially the role of apolipoproteins as carriers of cholesterol, and the role of inflammation.

Module 2 - Clinical Trials Overview

  • Critically appraise landmark clinical trials and apply important research to daily clinical practice.
  • Discuss recent and ongoing clinical trials and their role in lipid and lipoprotein treatment in cardiovascular prevention.

Module 3 - Diagnosis, Clinical Appraisal and Treatment Guidelines

  • Discuss and implement the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP ATP) Guidelines.
  • Compare and contrast the effectiveness of available risk assessment instruments and markers in predicting CV risk in all population groups.
  • Identify primary and secondary causes of dyslipidemia, including genetic disorders.
  • Compose a clinical care plan for reducing risk of CVD in patients with dyslipidemia.

Module 4 - Non-pharmacologic Therapies and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes

  • Recognize the importance of lifestyle modification in the reduction of cardiometabolic risk and implement strategies for encouraging appropriate changes in patients.
  • Assess the impact of diet, dietary supplements, and fatty acids on lipid parameters, weight and CVD risk reduction.

Module 5 - Pharmacologic Therapies and Treatment Targets

  • Explain the principles of pharmacological management of dyslipidemia and outline the effect of each agent on atherosclerotic disease, serum lipids, and lipoprotein metabolism.
  • Review mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of lipid-altering pharmacological therapies.
  • Optimize treatment strategies utilizing dose titration and combination therapy that may support better clinical outcomes.
  • Develop insight and skills in assessing and managing adverse events associated with lipid-altering drugs.

Module 6 - The Identification and Management of Cardiometabolic Risk

  • Describe aggressive therapies for the management of complex lipid disorders, metabolic syndrome and residual risk.
  • Describe Cardiometabolic factors and their impact on cardiovascular health.

Module 7 - Advanced Risk Assessment

  • Evaluate current and novel advanced lipid tests and biomarkers for atherosclerosis and their potential applications for CV risk detection and management, as well their limitations.
  • Discuss the roles of imaging in cardiovascular disease risk evaluation.
  • Describe combination therapies for the management of complex lipid disorders and residual risk.
